Vaginismus — pelvic health physiotherapy at Nuvo Physio

Frequently asked questions

Is vaginismus my fault? Can I just relax?
No, it’s not your fault. Vaginismus is an involuntary reflex—it’s not about willpower or desire. Your pelvic floor muscles have learned to contract protectively, often in response to fear, past pain, or trauma. The contraction happens automatically; you cannot consciously override it through willpower alone. That’s why physiotherapy—which retrains the muscles and nervous system—is so effective.
Will treatment be painful?
No. Our approach is consent-based and always at your pace. We never push beyond your comfort zone. Early sessions focus on relaxation, breathing, and education—no internal work unless and until you’re ready. If internal assessment or treatment begins, it’s gentle, slow, and you have full control to pause or stop at any time. If you also experience vulvodynia or vestibulodynia, we apply the same gentle, consent-based approach to tissue desensitization.
How long does vaginismus treatment take?
Recovery timeline varies, but many people see significant improvement within 2-4 months of consistent, weekly or bi-weekly treatment combined with home practice. Some benefit from more intensive support early on. Factors like trauma history, relationship dynamics, and anxiety levels can affect pace. We’ll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Can vaginismus be cured? Will it come back?
Vaginismus responds very well to treatment—many people achieve full, lasting improvement in pain-free penetration and sexual comfort. Once you’ve relearned relaxation and retrained your pelvic floor, the skill remains. However, stress, new trauma, or major life changes can occasionally trigger a return of old patterns. Maintenance strategies and the ability to self-manage help prevent relapse. Understanding the fear-pain cycle—similar to patterns seen in central sensitization and chronic pelvic pain—helps you recognize and address triggers early.
Can I involve my partner in my care?
Yes, and we often recommend it. If you have a partner, education and collaborative exercises can be valuable. Some couples benefit from specific guidance about patience, communication, and supporting desensitization at home. We can provide partner education sessions, pelvic health resources for couples, and guidance on how to build intimacy beyond penetration while you’re healing.
